 . Deferment Program. Municipalities participating in the Deferment Program shall offer to eligible taxpayers, businesses, nonprofits, and residents an extended grace period, through and including April 1, 2021, of any taxes on real property, personal property, motor vehicle, supplemental motor vehicle, or municipal water, sewer and electric rates, charges or assessments for such tax, rate, charge, or assessment. Eligible taxpayers, businesses, nonprofits, and residents are those that attest to, or document, significant economic impact by COVID-19 or that they are providing commensurate relief to those significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Guidance published by the Secretary of the Office of Policy and Management on April 17, 2020 and updated on April 24, 2020 shall be updated and republished within five days of the effective date of this order and shall be used by municipalities to determine which taxpayers, businesses, nonprofits, and residents shall be considered eligible for the Deferment Program for tax bills that become due and payable on January 1, 2021. Notwithstanding such Guidance, a participating municipality may, upon approval of its local legislative body, or, in any town in which the legislative body is a town meeting, by a vote of the board of selectmen, extend eligibility for the Deferment Program to other categories of taxpayers, businesses, nonprofits, and residents.

Notice is hereby given to the taxpayers of the Town of North Canaan that the second installment of taxes on the Grand List of October 1, 2019 will become due and payable on January 1, 2021 and will become delinquent if not paid on or before 
April 1, 2021 EXCEPT for real estate bills paid through a banking institution or non-filing landlords whose last day to pay is February 1, 2021.The motor vehicle supplement bills for vehicles newly registered after October1, 2019 will become due and payable January 1, 2021. The last day to pay these taxes to avoid interest is April 1, 2021If you have received a supplemental bill you are responsible to pay the 2nd half of your 2019 Grand List Motor Vehicle bill (received July 2020) also as well as the supplemental bill. They will become delinquent if not paid by April 1, 2021.
Per State Statue 12-146, interest of 1.5% per month or fraction thereof, will be applied to all delinquent bills from the due date, with a minimum charge of $2.00.
The Tax Collector’s Office is located in the Town Hall at 100 Pease Street, Canaan, CT. Please call ahead as the Town hall is locked to the general public. Pay online, by mail or drop box when possible. During the month of January we can be reached: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 9-12 and 1-3, Open Monday, February 1.Payments may be mailed to Tax Collector, 100 Pease Street#4, North Canaan, CT 06018. You can pay online with point & pay at www.northcanaan.org..
