The 250th subcommittee of the Friends of the Canaan History Center have been hard at work preparing festivities for this year's celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
To start off the celebration, a gala Washington's Birthday Ball has been planned for Feb. 21 at the Colonial Theater, featuring beer made from George Washington's own recipe (as well as other favorite drinks enjoyed by the Founding Fathers, food from Martha Washington's cookbook and country dancing.
The "spirits" of some of Canaan's most influential Revolutionary Era residents - ranging from the spy for Ethan Allen in the capture of Fort Ticonderoga, to the ironsmith who helped to arm the Continental Army, to the East Canaan resident who acted as Washington's deputy commissary general and more-will be present at the ball, sharing their tales of daring-do and Patriotic service with attendees.
Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 7pm, town historian Kathryn Boughton will speak at the Douglas Library about these characters, introducing their stories to townspeople. Come meet this fascinating group of movers and shakers who were there at the birth of our nation.
