Dog Licensing

Connecticut State Law requires all dogs 6 months of age or older to be licensed annually in the town where they reside. Licensing ensures dogs are properly vaccinated and can be identified if lost.



Dog licenses are issued by the Town Clerk’s Office each year.


Licensing Period
  • Annual Renewal Window: June 1 – June 30


  • License Year: July 1 – June 30


  • Dogs licensed after June 30 are subject to a late fee.


Required Documentation

To license your dog, please provide:



Rabies Vaccination Certificate
— Must be valid on the date of licensing.
— Certificate must include expiration date.



Spay/Neuter Certificate (if applicable)
— Required for reduced fee.
— Only needed once unless status changes.


Fees (Connecticut State Fee Schedule)
  • Spayed/Neutered Dog: $8.00


  • Unaltered Dog: $19.00



Late Fee:
$1.00 per dog per month after June 30



(Fees are set by Connecticut General Statutes.)


How to License Your Dog

You may license your dog in person, by mail, or (if town allows) online.


In Person


Bring:


  • Rabies Certificate


  • Spay/Neuter Certificate (if applicable)


  • Payment (check, cash, or money order)
     The Town Clerk will issue a license and tag during your visit.


By Mail


Mail:


  • Copy of Rabies Certificate


  • Copy of Spay/Neuter Certificate (if applicable)


  • Check payable to: Town of North Canaan
                                            100 Pease Street #7
                                             North Canaan, CT 06018

  • Self-addressed stamped envelope (optional but helpful)



License and tag will be mailed back to you.


New Dogs, Puppies, & New Residents

You must license within 30 days if:


  • You acquire a new dog


  • Your dog reaches 6 months old


  • You move into the town with a licensed dog



Provide the previous town’s license info if available.


Lost Tags

Replacement tags are available through the Town Clerk’s Office.
 Replacement Tag Fee: $0.50


Kennel Licenses

Commercial kennel or boarding facilities may require a Kennel License.
Please contact the Town Clerk’s Office for requirements and inspections.
