Elections
Overview
The Town Clerk’s Office plays a key role in Connecticut elections by providing voter information, processing registration, handling absentee ballots, and serving as an official contact for local election procedures. This page is your resource for everything you need to participate in upcoming elections in our town.
Connecticut elections are governed by state law and administered locally by election officials including the Town Clerk and Registrars of Voters.
Voter Registration
You must be registered to vote before participating in any election.
- Eligibility: U.S. citizen, resident of town, age 18 on or before the next election.
- How to Register: Forms are available from the Town Clerk’s Office or online via the Secretary of the State website.
- Deadlines: The pre-election registration deadline is typically 18 days before Election Day. Connecticut also offers Same Day Registration on Election Day at designated locations.
Same Day Voter Registration is available on Election Day at a designated location — see Secretary of the State information for details.
Absentee Ballots
If you are unable to appear at your polling place on Election Day, you may vote by absentee ballot.
- Eligibility: Must be a registered voter and have completed an application.
- Applications: Available from the Town Clerk or online (Secretary of the State).
- Deadlines: Absentee ballot applications and completed ballots must be received by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day to count.
- Permanent Absentee Status: Voters with qualifying disabilities may apply for permanent absentee status — contact the Town Clerk for details.
Early Voting
Connecticut offers early in-person voting before Election Day.
- Dates, times, and locations vary by election; the state’s election page lists current schedules and handbooks.
Early voting allows eligible voters to cast a ballot in person prior to Election Day without an absentee ballot application.
Same Day Registration
Same Day Registration (SDR) allows eligible residents to register and vote on Election Day at a designated location if they missed the regular registration deadline.
Important Reminders
- You must be a registered voter to receive and cast an absentee ballot or to vote at the polls.
- Ballots returned must be received by the Town Clerk by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.
