NOTARY SERVICES
Overview
The Town Clerk’s Office provides Notary Public services for documents that require notarization. A Notary Public serves as an official witness to the signing of important documents, confirms identity, and administers oaths when required.
Notary services are available during regular office hours. No appointment is necessary unless otherwise noted.
Services We Provide
The Town Clerk’s Office can assist with:
- Acknowledgments
- Jurats (oaths/affirmations)
- Certified oath administrations
- Sworn statements/affidavits
- Notarizing signatures on standard documents
Note: The Notary does not read or interpret documents, prepare documents, or provide legal advice.
Acceptable Identification
Valid, government-issued photo identification is required for all notarizations. Acceptable forms include:
- Driver’s License
- State-Issued ID Card
- U.S. Passport
- U.S. Military ID
ID must be current and bear the signer’s signature.
Fees
(Notary fees are set by State law.)
- $5.00 per notarization
- There is no fee to administer an oath of office for municipal officials, commissions, boards, or appointees performing official duties.
Important Information for Signers
To ensure your document can be notarized, please:
✔ Bring valid ID
✔ Do not sign the document beforehand (sign in front of the Notary)
✔ Make sure the document is complete (no blank required fields)
✔ Bring any witnesses if your document requires them
✔ Notary may refuse notarization if requirements are not met
Documents We Cannot Notarize
The Town Clerk’s Office cannot notarize:
- Wills or codicils
- Powers of attorney that require legal review
- Real estate closing documents requiring attorney participation
- Immigration documents requiring specialized certification
- Documents in a foreign language without an English section
- Documents requiring the Notary to provide legal advice

Becoming a Notary
Individuals interested in becoming a Notary Public in Connecticut must apply through the Office of the Secretary of the State.

Notary Public Licensing
Once commissioned, all new Notaries must take their official oath at the Town Clerk’s Office in their town of residence before beginning duties.
Oath of Office for Notaries
The Town Clerk administers the Notary Oath of Office for new and renewing Notaries.
Oaths must be completed within 30 days of receiving the Commission Certificate.

- Valid ID
- Oath fee- $20.00
