🏗 PERMITS & APPLICATIONS


The North Canaan Building Department reviews permit applications and ensures construction projects comply with the Connecticut State Building Code and local regulations.

When Is a Permit Required?


A building permit is typically required for:

  • New construction

  • Additions and structural alterations

  • Decks and porches

  • Roofing replacement

  • Siding replacement

  • Window and door replacement

  • Electrical upgrades

  • Plumbing work

  • HVAC installation or replacement

  • Generators

  • Pools (above or in-ground)

  • Sheds over allowable size limits

Before You Apply


Applicants may need prior approvals from:

  • Zoning Enforcement

  • Inland Wetlands (if applicable)

  • Septic/Sanitarian (for certain projects)

Failure to obtain required approvals may delay permit issuance.
