The North Canaan Building Department reviews permit applications and ensures construction projects comply with the Connecticut State Building Code and local regulations.
When Is a Permit Required?
A building permit is typically required for:
- New construction
- Additions and structural alterations
- Decks and porches
- Roofing replacement
- Siding replacement
- Window and door replacement
- Electrical upgrades
- Plumbing work
- HVAC installation or replacement
- Generators
- Pools (above or in-ground)
- Sheds over allowable size limits

Before You Apply
Applicants may need prior approvals from:
- Zoning Enforcement
- Inland Wetlands (if applicable)
- Septic/Sanitarian (for certain projects)
